Statement from Brintons Carpets

Comparison of Carpet Cleaning Methods
Interim Cleaning Systems
Absorbent Powder such as host – this is suitable for use on Brintons carpets

The principal of this system is the use of impregnated compound spread evenly over the surface of the carpet which is brushed in with cylindrically rotating brushes. Once the powder is dry it is vacuumed up using a very strong vacuum cleaner.
Advantages
• The main advantage of this system is that the carpet is left totally dry.
• Very little pile disruption takes place with this system so it is safe to use on very new carpets
• Only the soiled areas need be cleaned and these can be blended in with the non cleaned areas
• Works very well on greasy and oily stains but not as well on water soluble stains
• Uses cylindrically rotating brushes which help lift the pile and restore surface appearance
Disadvantages
• Expensive
• However carefully the carpet is vacuumed the residue can never be completely removed
• This system is generally only used for interim maintenance purposes and is not normally considered suitable for very heavily soiled areas.
• Hot water extraction is normally required on a frequency of once every year to completely remove any residues
Dri Foam (rotary) This system is not recommended for use on Brintons carpets
A system widely used as a maintenance procedure for heavily used areas. Based on the floor buffing system, with slower head rotation, either rotary brushes or absorbent pads are used. The shampoo solution is either applied to the machine pads or sprayed on the surface of the carpet and the machine is moved over the surface. The treated pad absorbs soil from the carpet and holds it until the pad is next cleaned.

Advantages
• Ease of operation and cheap to use.
• Dries very quickly
• Can be used in conjunction with hot water extraction for areas, which are so badly flattened and soiled that any pile disruption, which occurs is acceptable.
Disadvantages
• Its ease of use can result in inexperienced staff being employed
• Inexperienced use can result in the edges of the pad digging into the carpet tugging and distorting it causing it to become baggy
• Tends to have a roughening effect on the carpet pile causing it to become “bobbly”
• Also has a flattening effect on the carpet pile
• Requires hot water extraction at regular intervals to prevent shampoo build up
• Shampoo residues can build up in the pile and re-soiling then takes place within a short period of time. The tendency is to continue using this method for extended periods resulting in "the more it is cleaned the more cleaning it requires"
• Never really cleans to the base of the tufts it is just a surface freshen up.
Dri Foam (cylindrical) - Suitable for use on Brintons carpets

A low crystallising shampoo solution is fed from a container onto cylindrically rotating brushes, which are closely followed by an extraction device. Although the extraction is minimal, it does remove most of the foam produced.
Advantages
• Ease of operation and cheap to use.
• Dries very quickly
• Can be used in conjunction with hot water extraction for areas, which are so badly flattened and soiled that any pile disruption, which occurs is acceptable.
• Uses cylindrically rotating brushes which help lift the pile and restore surface appearance
Disadvantages
• Its ease of use can result in inexperienced staff being employed
• Requires hot water extraction at regular intervals to prevent shampoo build up

• Shampoo residues can build up in the pile and re-soiling then takes place within a short period of time. The tendency is to continue using this method for extended periods resulting in "the more it is cleaned the more cleaning it requires"
Hot Water Extraction - We consider this to be the most effective system for cleaning Brintons carpets.
Hot water extraction machines work on the principle of spraying jets of water/cleaning solution into the carpet pile and extracting with a vacuum head, which follows behind the jets. Some machines incorporate a brushing action between the spray head and vacuum. Hot water extraction machines may be used in two ways.
Method One
This method uses a shampoo solution in the tank, which is sprayed onto the surface of the carpet and immediately vacuumed up by the vacuum head. This is an acceptable method but there is a greater risk of the sprays in the machine becoming blocked and of a build up of shampoo residue in the pile. This may attract soil particularly when the carpet is wet.
Method Two
The hot water extraction tank is filled with a diluted fibre conditioner without shampoo. A pre-spray solution is then applied to the carpet using a power spray with a fine spray nozzle. The chemical is left for a few minutes in order for the chemicals to work and the carpet is then treated with the hot water extraction machine filled with the fibre conditioner rinse. This flushes the pre-spray from the carpet leaving the fibres in a very clean condition, less likely to attract further soiling. It is extremely important, whichever system is employed, that the carpet is not allowed to become over wet, otherwise shrinkage can occur.

After cleaning, the carpet should not be walked on until completely dry or rapid re-soiling will occur. Because of the drying time required, the area being cleaned needs to be closed off from use. Dependant on ambient conditions, we would expect the carpet to be completely dry in about 4 hours.
Advantages
• A very good deep cleaning system, which when correctly used will remove deep ingrained soil or residues from other cleaning systems.
• Machines with integral brushing action can be used to promote even more effective cleaning.
• Takes slightly longer to dry than interim cleaning systems but, when well maintained machines are used by a competent operator, the maximum drying time should be reduced to 4 hours.
• The carpet pile is lifted and deep cleaned resulting in cleaner carpets for longer periods
• Does not distort the surface pile when used correctly
Disadvantages
• Needs experienced skilled operatives
• Machines need to be correctly maintained and used or they will not pick up the maximum amount of water which could mean the backing becomes wet leading to possible shrinkage. As a guide normal drying time should be about 4 hours
• Walking on the carpet whilst wet must be avoided as rapid re-soiling can occur. Difficult to ensure this in some areas
• More expensive than some interim methods
Brintons recommend the use of HWE on our carpets and offer the following key points:

• Brintons recommend the low residue pre spray/fibre rinse method.
• If the shampoo method is used, it should be of a low residue type, which will not attract soil.
• Brintons recommend the use of “woolsafe” approved products and cleaning companies, please see their website http://www.woolsafe.org/
• The dilution and application rates recommended by the manufacturer for either system should not be exceeded.
• The carpet must be cordoned off from use so that it cannot be walked on whilst still wet.
• It is very important that the carpet is not allowed to become over wet during hot water extraction or any other cleaning process as shrinkage may occur.
• Machines must be maintained in peak condition to avoid any over wetting of the carpet
• The normal temperature of the water in the extraction machine should be set at a maximum of 55 degrees C. This will mean that the normal operating temperature of the water on the carpet will be approximately 35 degrees C.
