Indentations
The feet of furniture will create indentations on any carpet. Wherever possible, move the position of furniture and other heavy objects to help reduce permanent damage by indentation
Stairs
Stairways concentrate traffic (and, therefore, wear) on to very small areas of carpet. Due to their design, some stairs do not allow for the carpet to be lifted and moved - but where movement is possible, this should be carried out periodically in order to distribute the wear more evenly.
Fading
All carpets will fade if regularly exposed to high light intensities (eg sunlight). Where constant exposure to light cannot be avoided (eg from large windows in rooms facing the sun), judicious use of sun blinds, curtains, or any other suitable form of protection is recommended.
Abrasion
Rubber soled shoes and all types of heels can be particularly hard on carpets, especially in fron of chairs where heel abrasion cannot be avoided. It is a good idea to periodically move chairs so that the same areas of carpet are not being constantly affected in this way
Shading
When the carpet is new its pile is all in one direction giving an even colour appearance. However, once the carpet is subjected to traffic, its pile will eventually flatten slightly in the direction in which that traffic most commonly occurs. This creates shading (ie. the appearance of lighter and darker patches) which is accepted as a natural characteristic, especially in the case of plain or lightly patterned carpets.
